Types/Variations of Massage:

Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage therapy is the modality that comes to mind when most people think about massage. As the best-known type of bodywork performed today, one of the primary goals of the Swedish massage technique is to relax the entire body. This is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation; it is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation, and flexibility while easing tension.

Swedish massage techniques include circular pressure applied by the hands and palms, firm kneading, percussion-like tapping, bending, and stretching. Before and during your Swedish massage session, please communicate with your Professional Massage Therapist so you receive the relaxing massage you deserve.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue massage therapy is similar to Swedish massage therapy, but the deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia.

FYI: Studies have proven  in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that people’s blood pressure fell after a single 45 minute deep tissue massage. Additionally, a 2010 meta-analysis in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that massage modalities like deep tissue reduce stress hormone levels and heart rate while boosting mood and relaxation by triggering the release of oxytocin and serotonin.

Sports Massage

Sports massage therapy is for athletes of every kind, from Olympic to world-class professionals, and weekend joggers.  Each Sports Massage is geared to increase the motion of the Athlete’s body, generally focusing on the parts of the body that have been stressed and overused. Aspects of sports massage therapy are gaining popularity as useful components in a balanced training regimen. Sports massage therapy can be used as a means to enhance pre-event preparation and reduce recovery time for maximum performance during training or after an event. Athletes have discovered that specially designed sports massage promotes flexibility, reduces fatigue, improves endurance, helps prevent injuries, and prepares their body and mind for optimal performance.  For any of the Hardcore Regular Athletes (Sprinters, Runners, Joggers, Golfers, and Swimmers) we recommend a sports massage every week or two to prevent injuries of Ligaments and Tendons from over use and Repetitive Motions.

Trigger Point Therapy

A Trigger Point relieves a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body. A trigger point in the back, for example, may reduce referral pain in the neck. The neck, now acting as a satellite trigger point, may then cause pain in the head. The pain may be sharp and intense or a dull ache.

Trigger Point massage therapy is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. In this type of massage for trigger point therapy, the recipient actively participates through deep breathing as well as identifying the exact location and intensity of the discomfort.

The results and benefits of trigger point massage are releasing constricted areas in the muscles thus alleviating pain. You can experience a significant decrease in pain after just one treatment. Receiving massage with trigger point therapy on a regular basis can help naturally manage pain and stress from chronic injuries.

Prenatal Massage

Massage therapy during pregnancy is recommended for prenatal care. It is a great way to decrease stress and promote overall wellness. Massage relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and edema (or swelling). In addition, massage reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, encourages blood and lymph circulation, helps to relax nervous tension-which aids in better sleep-and can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes.

At DeSoto Massage, our therapists use a State of the Art Pregnancy Massage Table to insure extra care and comfort to Expecting Mothers.  The table is designed to accommodate expecting mothers in all trimesters; it is adjustable for the mother’s expanding stomach. Our therapists utilize different massage techniques such as reflexology, Swedish massage or certain techniques that address your specific requests and needs.

Here are some benefits of prenatal massage:

  • Relieves headaches
  • Relaxes muscle tension Reduces fatigue
  • Alleviates backaches
  • Relieves leg cramps
  • Reduces swelling/edema
  • Relieves pain
  • Enhances sleep

As Always, if at any time during the prenatal massage you experience discomfort, tell your therapist immediately.

DeSoto Massage recommends a 1 Hour Professional Massage once a month through your First and Second Trimester and then twice a month through your Third Trimester. It is also beneficial to see a Chiropractor throughout the pregnancy, as well as every time that you see your OBGYN.

We proudly work with local midwifes and congratulate you upon your growing family!

Geriatric Massage

Just because you are increasing in Age does not mean you can’t benefit from Massage . Our Licensed Massage Therapists use gentle and light application of Therapeutic Massage techniques to include passive stretching and a light oil or lotion to permit your muscles to be worked on without causing excessive friction to the skin. These techniques can help enhance blood circulation, combat depression, improve balance and flexibility, reduce the pain of arthritis, increase joint mobility, improve posture, and encourage overall well-being.

Geriatric massage is amazingly helpful for maintaining and improving overall health as we age. It also has been shown to relieve anxiety and provide comfort, especially to touch-deprived elderly clients.

Helpful Wellness Tip:  You may always decide what amount of clothing you prefer to wear during your massage. Throughout the session, you will be properly draped or covered-only the area being worked on will be exposed.
